When I was a little kid in backwoods Arkansas, we lived so far in the sticks that the school bus picked us up at 6 in the morning. I'd be standing out there in the dark, waiting for the bus, and I used to sing "Jolene" at the top of my lungs.
In all the years since then, Dolly has lost none of her charm. She's right that people see themselves in her. Keep putting the good stuff out there, Dolly, and thank you for being you.
This is so cute--thank you. I told my husband this story years ago, and I said I wondered if my mom ever heard me out there, singing in the dark. She died when I was a teenager, so I've never gotten to talk to her about a lifetime of things. My husband said something obvious: "Of course, she heard you. She probably thought it was adorable. Parents love moments like this." It gives me some peace and joy to know that, even though we never got to talk about it, my mom almost certainly heard elementary-school-me belting out Dolly's magic.
When I was in magazine journalism, I interviewed you, Dolly. At the very start of our conversation, you dropped a “cheap ring” (your words) that slid off your finger.
“Whichever one of us finds the ring gets to keep it!” you said. We both dropped to the floor and hunted for the treasure, which you found. We laughed the whole time. What a delicious way to start.
For ninety minutes you knocked me over with your intelligence, humor, and frank answers. I liked you enormously, not because you’re a star, but because you are yourself.
Hi I think you a such a wonderful humanitarian and philanthropist I've been talking to someone on zangi that says she's you is that you my name is Jackie Newport I'm 73, I live in a nursing home I am bedridden I don't walk but my mind still works fine I'm a singer abd a poet
Decades ago, when I was a little girl, my parents took my three sisters and me on a month-long road trip in an old rented RV - the Smoky Mountains were the highlight. The RV’s cassette player was half-broken and for some reason would only play you and Kenny Rogers. I made my mom hit play over and over. It was one of the best summers I can remember. As well, my favorite Christmas song ever is your “Hard Candy Christmas.” I’d ask my mom to play that over and over this time of year... I can hear it in my head even now. Welcome to Substack, Dolly ❤️
Used to live in Black Mountain, NC, and as an educator and parent, I love how you have supported reading programs all over the country. All the best with your new endeavors! Living in the UK now. They love you over here, too. Peace and blessings, Dolly.
It was a great adventure to be in the audience and listen to all your beautiful songs. It was an adventure in my home town Malmo, south of Sweden. Loved every minute of it 🥰❣️❣️❣️there is no limit to my love for you Dolly
I'm a middle class English woman and I have loved Ms Parton since I first heard her singing on the radio in the 1960s. Over the years, as I grew up and took on life, the good and the not so good, that love for the music was joined by RESPECT for the woman. Thank you, Ms Parton for this and everything else you've done.
God bless you. Your ability to connect to all Americans - people from different backgrounds, red and blue - is a balm in our broken world. Through your words and deeds and especially your music you show us what it means to walk humbly before our God.

What a cute story, I can see little you in my head, though we've never met

Welcome, Dolly! I made a list of cheesy welcomes, but 9 to 5 of them were terrible. So, hello 💖
Thank you for everything you are and do, Dolly. You are a beautiful soul and a blessing to all of us 💖
