Down on Music Row.... If you want to be a star that’s where you got to go and I got into Nashville early...sleepy, hungry, tired and dirty.
And I always make jokes that I left home, you know, with my matching luggage, four paper bags from the same grocery store and my guitar.
That was the thing. I’d been making trips back and forth with my Uncle Bill.
We’d go back and forth from Nashville and I always planned to go as soon as I graduated and Bill was on the road at the time with Carl and Pearl Butler.
So I took the bus down and got an apartment.
I have my Down on Music Row song that I wrote based on that whole idea of getting off, down on Music Row.
If you want to be a star, that’s where you got to go.
And I got into Nashville early, sleepy, hungry, tired and dirty.
And on the steps of RCA, I ate a stale sweet roll.
And in the fountain at the Hall of Fame I washed my face and read the names.
(That’s back when the Hall of Fame was up on 16th Avenue before they built the new place.)
And I washed up in the Hall of Fame fountain.
So I wrote a whole song about that.
