When “Here You Come Again” went Number One, it was like “YES! Thank You Lord!” That was my sign to say I was on the right track.
That was my first big deal with Sandy Gallin.
Sandy had got me with some people that were bringing me songs, got me with a producer, Gary Klein. Charles Koppelman was known to be able to find hit songs for people.
I was so praying that whatever I did after I had left Porter’s show was going to be something good so I could say…
I was right.
Not about that, but in my heart saying I was right about the move I made.
Because I believed that I was doing the right thing.
And then everybody in Nashville saying, “You’re leaving country…nobody’s going to do this and that.”
And that’s when I had said,
I’m not leaving country, I’m just taking it with me wherever I go.
How can I outrun country?
I am country, personified, and never wanted to lose that part of me.
I just wanted to be able to do bigger and better things, crossover things and all.
I knew I’d always be country as a person, even if I didn’t always just do hardcore country songs.
I had made that big decision.
A lot of people thought I’d made a big mistake leaving Porter’s show and feeling mad at me for doing it and feeling bad for Porter that I had gone.
It was just a lot of mixed emotions.
But when that song went number one, it was like, “Yes! Thank you. Thank you, Lord.”
That made me feel like that was my sign to say I was on the right track.
