I never particularly wanted to be in the movies. I had not necessarily pursued that.
I never ruled it out. I just knew that would have to come naturally, like everything else.
I was so in tune with my music and what I was doing with the touring and all.
I’d been offered a few movies and I didn’t want to do it. I’d never done that. Never done it.
But it was when Jane Fonda had sent this script, because I was really getting hot in country music at that time.
And so she sent it and it was a story that I thought was great.
I thought, well, I will do this.
I was triggering my business brain, too. I’ll get with them, and if I can write the theme song, then I’ll do this movie, because it was Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
I thought, well, if it’s a hit, then I can get to take credit with the two of them.
If it’s a flop, I can just blame it on the two of them…
Not really, but I just thought, if it’s a hit, great, if it’s a flop, nobody will even know.
I’d eat it. It’s no big deal.
So anyway, I got with Jane and I said, “Yeah, I’d love to do it if I can write the theme song.”
And so the rest is history.
